Paul brings extensive experience in the Hotshots and Mini Tennis space, drawing on modern coaching methods and the learn through play philosophy. His player-first approach focuses on creating engaging, dynamic sessions where every child is active, learning, and encouraged to think and make decisions for themselves.
On court, players spend as much time as possible with a racquet in hand. Sessions are designed so children frequently work in pairs, developing essential “sending and receiving” skills through cooperative play.
Paul creates environments that invite exploration and discovery, often using a Constraints Led Approach (CLA). This coaching method promotes skill development by adjusting game elements to simulate real match situations, allowing players to find their own movement solutions and build confidence through experience.
Hotshots uses modified balls, courts, and equipment tailored to each player’s developmental stage. Paul’s programme follows the Tennis Australia Hotshots pathway, while adding his own personalised approach to maximise individual progress. Competition and point play are integral to his sessions, helping players apply their skills in real game contexts and build resilience.
While the Hotshots programme includes clear progression stages through the different ball colours, Paul takes a flexible and individualised approach. Players may use different coloured balls within a session to either progress or refine specific skills. For example, he may use yellow balls in a controlled setting to teach topspin or softer balls for net play development.
Paul adopts the philosophy: “the ball is a tool.” Flexibility and adaptability are key to ensuring players continue developing confidently through the Hotshots pathway and into yellow ball tennis.
Paul uses Tennis Australia competencies along with other criteria to assess when a player is ready to advance, ensuring that most competencies are achieved before moving to the next level — while still allowing room for individual variation and readiness.
